A Legacy Restored

In 1857, a businessman named Jeremiah Lanphier felt led to start a simple prayer meeting in lower Manhattan. He posted a sign that read: “Prayer Meeting from 12 to 1 o’clock—Stop 5, 10, or 20 minutes, or the whole hour, as your time admits.” On September 23, 1857, Lanphier waited alone in a third-floor room. At 12:30, one man joined him. By the end of the hour, six had gathered. The next week, 20 came. Then 40. Within six months, 10,000 people were gathering daily for prayer across New York City. Within two years, a million people across America had been swept into what became known as the Fulton Street Prayer Revival—one of the greatest spiritual awakenings in American history.

It started with one man, one hour, and a simple invitation to pray.

Today, Times Square Church is reviving this hour of prayer which is also part of our legacy as a church.

The Power of One Hour

In 1857, the nation was in crisis. Banks were failing. Unemployment was soaring. The country was on the brink of civil war. In the midst of chaos and uncertainty, people ran to prayer—and God moved. Today, our world faces its own crises. But we believe what was true then is still true now: when God’s people gather to pray, heaven responds. Will you join us?

A Personal Invitation from Pastor Tim Dilena

“In the heart of this city, in the middle of the week, we’re inviting you to pause. To pray. To encounter God. Jeremiah Lanphier didn’t start a movement—he simply obeyed a prompting to pray. And God did the rest. We don’t know what God will do through Noon Prayer NYC, but we believe He’s calling us back to this one hour of seeking Him together. Whether you work in Midtown, are visiting New York, or live nearby—join us. One hour. Every Wednesday. Let’s see what God will do when His people gather to pray.”

— Pastor Tim Dilena

Absolutely. Come for whatever time you have. Jeremiah Lanphier’s original invitation was to “stop 5, 10, or 20 minutes, or the whole hour, as your time admits.” We honor that same spirit of flexibility.
