Overview
The Lead Audio Engineer is a vital member of the Times Square Church Production team, responsible for creating a dynamic and distraction-free worship environment through professional live sound reinforcement. Working closely with the Worship and Creative Departments, the Lead Audio Engineer ensures seamless technical execution across services, rehearsals, special events, and missions efforts.
This role demands technical expertise, leadership, teamwork, and a heart fully committed to serving the mission of Times Square Church.
Primary Responsibilities
(Includes, but not limited to the following)
- Live Sound Engineering: Operate or manage front of house, monitor, and broadcast mixing for Sunday services, Thursday rehearsals, special events, and additional ministry services.
- Soundcheck and Rehearsals: Lead and manage full sound-checks, dial in monitor mixes (including in-ear monitors), and troubleshoot musician and vocalist technical needs.
- Volunteer Development: Recruit, train, and equip volunteers to serve on the audio team, including teaching them how to mix for live worship settings (band, vocals, spoken word) and manage in-ear monitoring systems.
- Volunteer Scheduling: Create and manage the volunteer schedule for all services, rehearsals, and special events using planning software or scheduling tools.
- Team Collaboration: Work alongside Worship Leaders, Musicians, Production Staff, Creative Staff, and Pastoral Leadership to support ministry vision with technical excellence.
- Service and Event Coverage: Support all church-wide events, including Christmas, Easter, Prayer and Fasting services, Spanish Services, Men’s and Women’s Meetings, Missions Trips, and more.
- Equipment Maintenance: Maintain all audio systems and stage equipment to ensure peak performance; perform regular system checks and preventative maintenance.
- Technical Setup/Teardown: Oversee the setup and breakdown of stage audio equipment, microphones, backline, DI boxes, and wireless systems.
- Office and Administrative Tasks: Maintain inventory, prepare event reports, assist in technical planning, and contribute to departmental initiatives during office hours.
- Meetings and Communication: Actively participate in staff meetings, creative planning sessions, and weekly Zoom calls.
- Active Church Participation: Engage as an active member of Times Square Church, attending services regularly beyond technical duties, and contributing to the spiritual life of the church community.
Schedule
- Sunday Services: 7 am – 4 pm (10 am and 1 pm Services)
- Tuesday Morning Zoom Calls: 10 am – 12 pm
- Tuesday Midweek Services: 5 pm – 9 pm
- Thursday Rehearsals:
- 5 pm – 7 pm (Band/Team Rehearsals)
- 7 pm – 9 pm (Full Worship Rehearsals)
- Wednesday Staff Meetings: 12 pm – 2 pm
- Office Hours: As scheduled
Qualifications
- 2+ years minimum experience in live sound engineering, preferably in a church or concert production environment.
- Proficient with digital consoles (e.g., DigiCo Quantum 338, WAVES, Yamaha CL Series, Allen & Heath, Midas, or similar).
- Must demonstrate excellence in live mixing, with the ability to balance a full band, 100-voice choir, frontline vocalists, and spoken word (sermons) with clarity, musicality, and consistency.
- Expertise in working with in-ear monitor systems and wireless microphone systems.
- Proven ability to recruit, train, and mentor volunteer team members in live sound operations.
- Experience scheduling and managing volunteers using Planning Center or similar scheduling tools.
- Ability to make sound, critical decisions under pressure.
- Ability to work weekends, evenings, holidays, and attend special events as scheduled.
- Strong attention to detail with a desire to continually improve existing systems.
- Able to see the big picture and pivot quickly if necessary.
- Team player with excellent communication skills.
- Experience mixing gospel and contemporary worship styles preferred.
- Working knowledge of video or lighting technology is a plus.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus for Spanish service support.
- Previous missions trip experience a plus.
